What is Salt Therapy?

Salt therapy, also known as halotherapy, is a natural therapy that relies on breathing in salt particles dispersed through the air. By breathing in the salt, those undergoing this type of therapy enjoy the positive effects that it brings to their skin, mind, and respiratory system. Specifically speaking, these effects are known to help beautify one’s skin, keep negative emotions at bay, and reduce complications caused by respiratory issues.

As a practice, salt therapy originated in the caves and salt mines of Eastern Europe, and has been growing ever since. However, instead of traveling to these places for such air, modern salt therapy brings the benefits to one’s own hometown. Today, many people around the world can enjoy what this therapy has to offer.

How Does Salt Therapy Work?

The process starts with a device called a halogenerator. This machine comes in all sorts of shapes and sizes but serves one general function regardless of the model: To grind and disperse the salt into the air. Typically, the anatomy of a halogenerator consists of a salt tank, dispenser, fan, grinder, and a few motors to get everything up and running.

When operating this device, salt is poured into the salt tank and taken to the grinder through the dispenser. This grinder then crushes the salt into precise microparticles. Afterwards, the fan blows the particles out of the halogenerator and into the air for customers to inhale. It must be noted that the salt used for this is pharmaceutical grade, as other types of salt are impure and do not dissolve easily within the lungs. Additionally, other types of salt do not grind as well when put into a halogenerator.

Where is Salt Therapy Administered?

Salt therapy is usually administered through a salt cave, salt room, or a salt booth. While each feature halogenerators, as well as the same benefits brought about by the machine, they differ greatly in other aspects. These differences exist to appeal to the various wants and needs of the user.

The uniqueness of a salt room is its large size. Because it is bigger than a salt booth, it can accommodate several people simultaneously. It is also built to simulate a similar ambiance found within the caves and mines where salt therapy was born. Like these places, one may find that the floor is covered in Himalayan salt, while parts of the walls are made from bricks of salt. To simulate the darkness of a cave or mine, salt rooms may also have a low light display. Within the room, this low light setting can be accompanied by soothing music and zero-gravity chairs to offer a calming atmosphere.

Meanwhile, the salt booth gives the user a better sense of privacy. Due to the privacy and tighter space it provides, the salt booth allows the user to absorb more salt into their skin. Furthermore, salt booths offer shorter 15 minute sessions, so sessions may be enjoyed on a lunch break. Additionally, depending on the model, the salt booth may retain the salt brick wall feature found within salt rooms. Some of the brick walls in the Salt Booths, such as the ones at EPIC Services, also include chromotherapy.

Whether one favors using the room or the booth, salt therapy in any of its forms is great. Give a session a try, and breathe freely today.
